Rehoboth Beach & Philadelphia Marathon results

Seashore Rehoboth Marathon and Half-Marathon
The past weekend was filled with running achievements by PCVRC members.

On Saturday in Rehoboth, a big contingent of club members was in attendance for the Seashore Rehoboth Marathon and Half-Marathon. You could say the club dominated the competition, winning three of the top four places and several others as well. In the Half-Marathon Josh Loren was the overall winner, in 1:14:23, besting the runner-up by over seven minutes, while Theresa Kauffman was first female master in 1:35:50.. In the Marathon, Andy Jakubowitch was the male winner in 2:45:15 and Kelly Horowitz was the female winner in 3:03:52.

The marathon was the first half of a double marathon weekend for Scott Hodukavich, who had flown in from South Carolina for a double dose of masochism. Wes Stafford used the half-marathon as a warm-up for the Philadelphia Marathon the next day.

Club members Dan Weintraub, John Culnane, Jim Bray, and Barbara and Tony Chelpaty were riding bikes along parts of the course, cheering people on. President Gerry Herman came down for the day to cheer people in Rehoboth.

Also on Saturday, the Turkey Trot 5K and 10Ks were run in Newark. While John Schultz used the running of both as a warm-up for Sunday's Philadelphia Marathon, Bob Bennett set an age-group course record for men 65-69 in the 5K by running a 23:47.

Philadelphia Marathon, Half-Marathon and Rothman 8K
On Sunday the Philadelphia Marathon, Half-Marathon and Rothman 8K took place. The combined results of these events are the last in the MA-USATF road series for 2009. Although we don't have those results yet, it is clear from the results of the three events that PCVRC had a complete team. Bob Taggart completed his first race in several months.

8K results:
David James 29:32 1st 55-59
Dean Coffin 33:00
Dan Simmons 33:43 3rd 60-64
Bob Taggart 37:31 1st 65-69
Jerry Herman 43:49
Sue Simmons 57:14

Half-Marathon result:
Tom Jermyn 1:19:11 1st 45-49

Marathon results:
Wes Stafford 3:22:58 BQ
Carole Feole 3:49:27 5th of 126 BQ
Scott Hodukavich 4:33:01
John Schultz 5:49:27

Immediately below are the combined results of the Rothman 8K, the Philadelphia Half-Marathon and the Philadelphia Marathon, which together comprised the last event of the MA-USATF series. While the combined events could have stood for two teams of five, including a woman in each, the fact is that no team in the series had their second group of five score high enough to displace one of the other scores in the series. So each of seven clubs got only one team score out of the three races. Perhaps MA-USATF needs to rethink this format.

In the second grid, it shows that PCVRC held on to third place in the series. This will be worth a nice reward to the club and the proceeds will be used to underwrite the dues of those members who participated in some of the USATF events, when both the Road and Off-Road Series are included.

In the third grid are listed all of the PCVRC participants in the MA-USATF Road Series with their age grades in each race. Not only did David James run every race in the series and score for the club in each race, but he was the overall individual male winner of the series. Dean Coffin, who was the club's volunteer coordinator for the races and who organized group rides to the races, also participated in every race. In all the club had 25 participants in the series with 16 of them scoring for the club. But the club thanks each and every participant, especially those who were the requisite five people, including a female, for the Stone Harbor 10K, the Radnor Run Five Miler and the Ben Franklin Bridge Challenge 10K. An extra especial thanks goes to the female participants. Because of injuries and other circumstances, the club needed different women to help with the various races. While Deborah Compton and Theresa Kauffman were in the early races, later on we needed Carole Feole, Kelly Horowitz and Lorri Fencer to run. Claire Neilan and Tricia Syzmanski also participated. Epi Camacho was a late recruit to the series and helped out with age grades in the 80s.

The last race of the Off-Road Series is the Delaware Cross-country Championships 5K this Saturday at Brandywine Creek State Park.
