USATF Phidippides Award for Masters
Any masters runner (40+), who belongs to USATF, is welcome to apply for a Phidippides Award, a plaque made by Hasty Awards. the idea is to honor masters runners, based on certain levels of participation, rather than outstanding performance in races in 2009. For each USATF certified race of 5k or 5 Miles, a rummer would earn 1 point; 2 points for a race of 10k to 15 k; 3 points for 10 miles to half marathon; and 4 points for any event 25 k or longer. I dare say that most club USATF members have done enough racing to earn a Gold Plaque, which would require 20 points for anyone 40-59; 16 points for someone 60-79 and 8 points for 80+. Silver or bronze plaques require less points. For details and to download applications for the award, to go:
http://www.usatf.org/groups/RoadRunning/PhidippidesAward/index.asp.

It doesn't cost anything, but you have to provide the names of events you participated in, distances and website/contact info.

Christopher McDougall, author of The New York Times bestseller Born to Run
From University of Delaware's UDaily, maybe of interest to some...
11:08 a.m., Sept. 29, 2009----Christopher McDougall, author of The New York Times bestseller Born to Run, will present a seminar at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23, in Room 100 Wolf Hall.

The seminar is titled "Born to Run -- Secrets of the World's Greatest Ultrarunners.? The presentation, which is free and open to the community, is part of a Biomechanics and Movement Science Seminar.
McDougall is a former war correspondent for the Associated Press and is now a contributing editor for Men's Health magazine.

A three-time National Magazine Award finalist, he has written for Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, Outside and Men's Journal.
He graduated from Harvard University in 1985, and now does his own running among the Amish farms around his home in rural Pennsylvania.

His bestselling new book, Born to Run, examines the fabulous athletic feats of the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's Copper Canyons and delves into breaking research that humans -- all humans -- are potentially the greatest long-distance runners on earth.

"This book is a captivating and true story filled with colorful characters interwoven with biomechanics and evolution,? said Irene Davis, UD professor of physical therapy and director of research for the Drayer Physical Therapy Institute. ?It may transform the way we think about footwear and running."

Davis added that because of the book, she is now running barefoot
