Recap of 2009 by Dean Coffin:
Club: Pike Creek Valley R.C. was 3rd again - for the second year in a row. South Jersey A.C. won again,
for the 19th year in a row. Runaway Success was close to them this year (only down by 26 points).
More important is that Downingtown RC was only 48 pts behind us, and 5th place Greater Philly TC was
80 pts behind us. Downingtown had come on strong the second half of the year. Both of those clubs have
deep talent and could try to get 3rd place away from us next year.
Our strength was participation - we fielded a full team at every race. This is no small feat considering
the size of our club and the number of folks who make the Grand Prix circuit a part of their individual
goals. Female participation continues to be our weakest point. Many races we only had one female -
especially in the second half of the season. Thanks to Carole Feole (radnor5 + Philly26.2) & Lorri Fencer
(BF 10k) otherwise we would've dropped down to last place like what had happened in 2007.
Individuals: David James - overall male #1. Great season and kept getting stronger in the second half;
he averaged 84.3% and had a cushion over the 2nd place guy. David & I were among only 6 men that
completed all 10 events. I finiished 14th overall - my best placing in the 5 years I've participated.
Dirk Sweigart & Dan Simmons also made the top 20 men. Tom Jermyn only completed 4 races,
but averaged 81%; Epi Camacho joined our club late in the year: 3 races @ avg 82%.
For the women, Deborah Compton was our top overall performer... and she only completed the first
4 races of the year! Feole & Fencer were already noted above. Teresa K. had an up & down year
(after that bicycle accident). Other participants (I'd mention them all since we really need to
build our USATF female participation): Kuss, Horowitz, Hessel, Neilan, Szymanski.

How to join team
Everyone's got their own training plans, goals, and favorite workouts to get into shape.
To get ready for a strong first-race club score, please ask yourself these questions:
1. Have I paid dues for USATF and Pike Creek?
2. Did I remember to affiliate PCVRC as my USATF club (#0025).
3. When's the last time I encouraged another runner to join the club, or asked a PCVRC member to run a
USATF race together?
Participation is key! Fast or slow, 100% ready to race or not, we
need to field a complete squad at each event. Racing as a workout, or 75% effort, is infinitely better
than 4 runners giving it their all without a 5th to complete the team. Besides bragging rights with the
7 other clubs, there's the financial incentive: a 2nd on the the Road & 3rd on the Trails will pay $900 prize
money this year - a big boost to our social budget!
Thanks, I look forward to seeing you on the roads & trails,
Dean
