I started running in 2000 after my daughter turned two. My primary motivation was to lose some weight and
have more energy to keep up with a two year old. I joined the gym where I worked and started mixing weight
training with an occasional cardio session. This included either an elliptical trainer or the treadmill
in the gym. One day at the gym I noticed a small group of about 3-5 people heading outside to run.
It was a nice day and the group was heading out to run up to the Brandywine River so I decided that I
would give it a try. After a few weeks, the same group had convinced me to try a 5k.
The 5k became the measurement of success over the course of the next 12 months. I was out every two weeks
or so trying to improve my time. After meeting more runners I then started entering longer distances
including 5 mile, 10 mile, half-marathon and eventually full marathons. I'm not the fastest nor the
slowest and generally I compete against myself or simply run for pleasure. I enjoy running with a group
for support and camaraderie. I have come to enjoy the post run or race festivities as much as the run itself.
I have made many new friendships through the sport of running. I try to give back a little to the sport
and encourage others to do the same. The sport of running can be anything you want it to be.
